Apparently Amazon hasn’t killed off enough good bookstores and other local retailers. No, they want control. Y’know, the free market is always freer (although the prices aren’t) the less competition we have. Amazon has a new offer: They’ll give you a $5 credit if you go into a local store, scan an item, tell them how much the item is being sold for and where, and then buy it from them. Basically, they’re paying you 30 pieces of silver to do some market research for them, plus if they suck enough blood that means fewer competitors next time. And I guess if you couldn’t give a rat’s ass about your local retailer and business owner, this probably looks like a good tradeoff. You get to decide what matters. You can suck along with them if you want to.
Friends who live in remote places tell me what a godsend Amazon is because they don’t have a local bookstore or DVD retailer. Maybe so, but there are plenty of other local retailers who will be happy to send you the same merchandise – it’s not as though they print books and manufacture DVDs at Amazon’s warehouse in Seattle or whatever sorry place they reside. Even our little burg of 3,500 has an independent bookstore; they struggle, but they are a great presence here. And there are plenty of others as well, here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here.
(Sorry if I didn’t include one close to you – post in comments and we’ll include next time.)
